Privacy policy
Whownit is built to be used without an account and without tracking. This page explains the little data we do handle, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Who we are
Whownit (whownit.com) is responsible for the data described here. For any privacy question or request, write to privacy@whownit.com.
When you browse
You don’t need an account, and we don’t set cookies for visitors.
- Analytics. We use Plausible Analytics, which doesn’t use cookies and doesn’t store IP addresses. It gives us aggregate numbers — pages viewed, searches made, links followed, country and device type — without identifying you.
- Hosting. Like any website, our hosting provider processes technical request data, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver pages and protect the service from abuse.
- Links to alternatives. When you follow a link to an alternative, we record which alternative was clicked from which company page — not your IP address or browser details.
When you report an error or suggest a company
The correction form sends us your message, the page you were on and, if you add them, a source link and your email address. Email is optional; we use it only to ask about or reply to your report, and we never publish reports.
To stop spam, we also store a code derived from your IP address that changes every day. It can’t be turned back into your IP address, and we use it only to limit how many reports one sender can make in an hour.
We keep reports while we need them to review the information and to keep a record of corrections. You can ask us to delete your email address or your report at any time.
Why we may use this data
We rely on our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving the site and in keeping published facts accurate. When you give us your email address, we use it because you chose to provide it, and only for your report.
Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run Whownit, each bound by its own data processing terms:
- Vercel — website hosting
- Neon — database hosting (where correction reports are stored)
- Plausible Analytics — cookieless website statistics
Some providers may process data outside your country, under the safeguards in their data processing terms. We don’t sell personal data, and we don’t share it with advertisers.
Partner websites
Once you leave Whownit through a link to an alternative, the other website’s own privacy policy applies. Affiliate partners may use cookies on their site to record that you arrived from Whownit — see our affiliate disclosure.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it. Write to privacy@whownit.com and we’ll respond within one month. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
